The ban on smoking on 24 beaches across the kingdom comes into effect next Thursday (February 1) which affects both Pattaya and Jomtien beaches and as result officials here in Pattaya are out in force letting as many people know as possible about the upcoming enforcement.
A quite smoking event was held on Jomtien Beach on January 19 supervised by Pattaya’s Mayor Anan Charoenchasri where personnel from the Disease Control Department, Marine and Coastal Resources Management Office and Pattaya Police officers were all in attendance disseminating information about the ban which is about to come into effect after being signed into a law in the latter party of 2017.
Also at the event, those who attended were offered free health checks and officials provided help and advice on how to give up smoking.
There was a lecture on the effects that smoking has on a person’s body as well as the effects second-hand smoke has on other people as well as the environmental impact improperly disposing of cigarette butts has on the environment.
The event concluded with a beach clean-up where officials stated that they collected over 50,000 discarded cigarette butts from the sands.
Pattaya’s mayor has handed over the implementation of the beach smoking ban over to the Marine and Coastal Resources office, but Pattaya police and municipal officers will also be enforcing the ban and anyone caught smoking on the beaches outside of the designated smoking areas have been told to expect a hefty fine and or even jail term for lighting up.
